“It is usually the imagination that is wounded first, rather than the heart; it being much more sensitive.” ~ Henry David Thoreau; American essayist, poet, philosopher, abolitionist, naturalist, tax resister, development critic, surveyor, and historian.
The understanding of the activities or movements of the ego is vital to develop wisdom and lead a healthy and happy life, because the mind which is rogue and uncontrolled is the mind which will bring much more suffering and stress to the life of the individual. This unruly mind leads to obsession with what happened, with what affected us in the past, which leads to blindness of what is really happening in the present; thus we become reactive and wounded by whatever it is said in the present, just because our ego-minds are still fixated with past memories and still focusing upon the hurtful experience.

It is like walking around with your finger deep in your wound, as you walk it hurts no matter what you do or what anybody says or does; you cannot heal until you leave the past and get your finger out of the wound.
Being sensitive is one thing, but being over-sensitive is another. Like everything in life, you must find a balance, and so you must not obsess over your own wounds; because if you stay in what happened, if you allow your ego to obsess, you cannot get the strength to heal and move on, you will be hurting yourself even more and distancing others as well. In this obsession your mind gets warped into illusion, any words and messages from the world will appear hurtful to you due to your finger still in the wound of the past, and you will miss the joy of living in the moment where you find happiness and the reality of life.
Remind yourself daily to find a balance, and to remove your finger from past wounds in order to strengthen yourself, heal, deeply connect to people around you, and so lead your life forward.
